How to make a custom designed wedding Dress for $25

My daughter was getting married and as a single parent the cost of the wedding was a major factor. Time I had but money well that was a little more challenging. I happen to know how to sew and I suggested to her that I make the dress and this would be my present to her and her husband for their special day.
It was one of the most wonderful times in both our lives. Every Sunday we had a standing time to work on her wedding dress.
The first thing we did was she and I went shopping to all the ritzy wedding shops so she could try on styles that suited her figure. After several shopping trips she started to get an idea of the type of dress she wanted being the neckline and the cut etc.
My daughter then designed the dress herself by drawing out the design and explaining to me what she had in mind.
Next was the shopping trip to buy the fabric. We went to the suburb where they sell all the fabric you could ever want. This was very important as all the fabric shops compete for the customers and prices are really very reasonable.

We did have one shop attendant basically laugh at us when we told them our budget was $100 max (although we spent only $25) and they told us that the wedding satin was about $25 a meter and there was no way we would be able to get anything to make a wedding dress for the type of budget we had. We felt a little disheartened however we left that shop and kept going perhaps even more determined to reach our goal!!. We found that the word “wedding” in front of a fabric meant that the price went up!!! We found a lovely white satin in a lot with other colours of satin. There were yellows and blues and of course the white roll we needed for the fabulous dress designed by my daughter the beautiful “bride to be”.

We had calculated the amount of fabric we needed based on the width of the roll and had it cut from the roll. The total for the white satin and white organza was remarkably only$25!!!!!

Now we had to make the dress. We needed a made the pattern so using paper and a little guess work and a small amount of skill and lots of trial and error we finally had our pattern and it was time to cut out the dress. You may also be able to find a pattern close to the dress you want to custom design and modify it.

Back to the story of the $25 wedding dress… We spent every Sunday afternoon for the next six months together my daughter and I. We cut out the dress, pinned, tried on the garment and sewed, iron and re cut until it emerged as a triumph!!! Oh she looked so beautiful and her husband cried at his glorious bride!!! I have included a photo of the bride and her personally designed wedding dress.. it did indeed cost $25 and a lot of time and love.. but worth every second!

PS. My daughter is married now and had a baby boy. She is also expecting her second child. She was never interested in sewing and used to tell me “why should I learn to sew mum when I have you?”……My father’s wife passed away about 2 years ago and my daughter inherited her sewing machine. She never used it at all until she was a mother. She desinged and sewed a stuffed crocodile pillow to wrap around her little son when he was still learning to sit up and he kept falling over and hitting his head when he lost his balance. The stuffed crocodile was a great idea and she designed and sewed it herself!!!! She told me she remembered all the sewing lessons and pattern making lessons we shared whilst sewing her wedding dress and now she is a designer and sewer herself… I am so proud of her!!!!

P.P.S. My son has a little business hiring radios to security firms and some of those guards are HUGE!!! My daughter earned a bit of money designing and making the fluro vests for a few of the bigger guards who could not buy off the rack safety vests. So she has used her new knowledge to earn some money as well.
